Looking ahead
Serene Retreat captures a more inspiring direction for bathroom design. Rather than framing the conversation around "aging in place," this project reflects the idea of creating a true health and wellness spa at home. That shift in language matters. It moves the focus away from limitation and toward comfort, beauty, confidence, and daily restoration.
The result is a bathroom that feels luxurious today while also being thoughtfully designed for the years ahead. Open access, calming materials, layered lighting, and spa-inspired details come together to create a space that supports both wellness and elegance. It is not about making do. It is about living well.
Features shown
- Backlit mirrors — Shadow-free LED illumination behind the mirror provides even, flattering light for grooming while adding a soft ambient glow to the vanity wall.
- Warm ambient lighting — Layered cove and recessed lighting in a warm color temperature creates an enveloping, relaxed atmosphere throughout the space.
- Calm, spa-like palette — A curated range of warm sandstone, cream, and natural wood tones sets a soothing visual foundation that feels grounded and serene.
- Floating vanity — A wall-mounted vanity lifts off the floor for visual lightness, easy cleaning beneath, and an unbroken floor plane — a hallmark of modern spa design.
- Soothing natural materials — Organic stone, warm wood grain, and soft plaster textures create surfaces that are beautiful to look at and comforting to the touch.
- Deep soaking tub — A generously proportioned tub designed for full-body immersion, positioned as the room's centerpiece for a daily bathing ritual.
- Curbless shower entry — A seamless, zero-threshold floor plane with no step or curb — the look of a luxury European hotel that also makes the room feel larger and more open.
- Slip-resistant flooring — Large-format matte tile with spa-grade texture provides confident footing in wet conditions without sacrificing the clean, seamless aesthetic.
- Towel warmer — A wall-mounted heated rack keeps towels dry, warm, and ready at all times — a simple luxury that makes every shower feel like a hotel experience.
- Built-in shower bench — A cantilevered bench at comfortable seated height invites you to linger in the steam and spray, doubling as a foot rest or a place to simply pause.
- Linear drain — A sleek wall-adjacent drain allows the shower floor to pitch in a single direction, enabling large-format tile layouts and a cleaner, more modern look.
- Rain shower experience — A generous ceiling-mounted rain head delivers full-coverage, drenching flow that mimics warm rainfall with no protruding hardware.
- Handshower for flexibility — An adjustable wall-mounted handshower on a slide bar provides complete control at any height — standing, seated, or anywhere in between.
- Underfloor heating — Radiant electric heat beneath the tile warms the floor surface so the bathroom feels comfortable the moment you step in, every morning of the year.
More features to consider
- Steam shower system — A compact generator transforms the enclosed shower into a personal steam room in under a minute. Add aromatherapy and chromatherapy for a full sensory wellness experience.
- Thermostatic valve with digital controls — Lock in your ideal water temperature with one touch and save personal presets. The water turns on and off without ever losing your set temp.
- Bidet toilet or integrated washlet seat — Warm water cleansing, heated seat, air drying, and deodorizer — the single biggest daily comfort upgrade in any bathroom.
- Circadian tunable lighting — LED fixtures that shift color temperature throughout the day: bright and energizing in the morning, warm and calming at night, supporting natural sleep rhythms.
- Designer grab bars and integrated support — Modern assist bars in matte black, brushed gold, or polished nickel that coordinate with luxury hardware. Structural strength that looks purely decorative.
- Chromatherapy and aromatherapy tub upgrades — Underwater LED color therapy and integrated essential oil diffusion turn the soaking tub into a complete multi-sensory wellness system.
- Night lighting and toe-kick LEDs — Soft warm-glow lighting along the vanity base lets you navigate at night without overhead lights, protecting your sleep cycle while adding a beautiful ambient layer.
- In-drawer electrical outlets — Dedicated outlets inside vanity drawers keep grooming tools charged and stored out of sight, so countertops stay completely clear.
- Voice-controlled smart integration — Control lights, music, exhaust fans, and shower presets by voice — no wet hands on switches. The bathroom joins the connected home.
- Anti-fog and smart mirror features — Integrated defogger pads keep the mirror clear after the hottest shower, with options for time display, temperature readout, and tunable LED color.
- Wider doorway and pocket door entry — A 34-36" clear opening makes the bathroom feel more inviting the moment you approach it, and a pocket door recovers square footage lost to a traditional swing.
- Invisible infrastructure — Solid blocking behind finished walls, conduit for future wiring, and plumbing rough-ins for features not yet installed. Hidden investments that cost almost nothing during construction and keep every future option open.
- Comfort-height or wall-hung toilet — A seated height closer to a chair for natural comfort, or a wall-mounted model with adjustable height and a completely open floor beneath for effortless cleaning.
- Body spray hydrotherapy — Targeted wall-mounted spray jets at hip, mid-back, and shoulder height turn the shower into a full-body therapeutic experience for muscle relief and recovery.
