The Original Stainless Steel Sink - Made by the Company That Invented It
Walk into almost any beautifully designed modern kitchen and there's one element doing more daily work than anything else: the sink. It's the first thing you reach for in the morning, the last thing you clean before bed, and the centerpiece of every meal you prepare in between. In a great kitchen, the sink isn't an afterthought. It's the centerpiece. And no name in the world has shaped what that centerpiece looks like more than Franke.
Founded in 1911 by Hermann Franke in Rorschach, Switzerland, and headquartered in Aarburg ever since, Franke is the company that invented the modern stainless steel kitchen sink. The first one — Hermann Franke's own design — was produced in 1934. The first fully welded, seamless stainless steel sink followed in 1937. By the end of the twentieth century, Franke had manufactured more than 50 million kitchen sinks worldwide. Today, four generations after Hermann's original workshop, Franke remains family-led, employs over 7,600 people across more than 60 companies on five continents, and operates a major U.S. manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee. We've made Franke a foundation of the kitchen collection at European Kitchen & BathWorks because, simply put, no other brand has earned this much expertise in the single most-used object in your home.
Why It Matters in Your Home. Most kitchen sinks fade, scratch, dent, or stain within years. A Franke sink doesn't. The company spent the better part of a century perfecting how stainless steel, fireclay, and granite composite hold up to real daily life — and the result is a sink that genuinely looks the same in year fifteen as it did the day it was installed.
The Materials. Franke offers three distinct sink materials, each engineered for a different design language. Stainless steel — the original Franke specialty — uses premium chrome-nickel construction that resists staining, rust, and corrosion. Fragranite — pioneered by Franke and made of 80% real granite — is exceptionally tough, warm to the touch, and available in a wide range of nature-inspired colors. Fraceram fireclay delivers a smooth, impervious surface ideal for traditional farmhouse aesthetics.
The Workcenter Sink. Beyond materials, Franke has redefined what a sink can do. The Workcenter and Mythos Masterpiece sinks transform the basin into a multi-tier prep, cook, and clean station — with cutting boards, colanders, drying racks, and serving boards that integrate directly into the sink itself. The sink stops being a bottleneck in your workflow and becomes the most efficient surface in the kitchen.
